The correct order matters

Many institutions require photo ID updated before they'll accept your name change. Follow this order to avoid blocked applications.

1

Standesamt — Marriage Registration or Name Change Application

For marriage name changes: declare your chosen name at the Standesamt (Civil Registry Office) at the time of or after marriage. For other legal name changes: submit a formal application (Antrag auf Namensänderung) to your local Standesamt under the Namensänderungsgesetz with valid grounds.

2

Einwohnermeldeamt — Update Residence Registration

Visit your local Einwohnermeldeamt (Citizens' Registration Office) with your Standesamt confirmation to update your Anmeldung (residence registration). This is used as proof of address and name for most subsequent updates.

3

Personalausweis (National ID Card)

Apply for a new German national ID card (Personalausweis) at your Bürgeramt or Einwohnermeldeamt with your updated registration confirmation and Standesamt documents. Biometric photo required.

4

Reisepass (Passport)

Apply for a new German passport at your Bürgeramt with your updated Personalausweis and Standesamt confirmation. Bring a biometric passport photo.

5

Führerschein (Driving Licence)

Apply for a replacement driving licence at your Straßenverkehrsamt (Road Traffic Office) with your updated Personalausweis. Note: EU driving licences do not show the holder's name prominently, but updating records is still recommended.

6

Finanzamt — Tax Identification

Your Steueridentifikationsnummer (Tax ID) stays the same after a name change, but notify your local Finanzamt of the new name for your tax records. The update is usually automatic when your Meldeamt records change.

7

GKV Health Insurer (Krankenkasse)

Notify your public health insurer (e.g. TK, AOK, Barmer) of your name change. Update your Gesundheitskarte (health card). Most insurers accept written notification or an online form.

8

Deutsche Rentenversicherung (Pension)

Notify the Deutsche Rentenversicherung of your name change to update your pension insurance records. This can usually be done by letter or online.

9

Banks & Financial Institutions

Notify your bank (Deutsche Bank, Sparkasse, Commerzbank, etc.) of your name change with your updated Personalausweis and Standesamt confirmation. Update all accounts, cards, SEPA mandates, and online banking profiles.

10

Employer & HR Records

Inform your employer's HR department of your name change with your updated Personalausweis so payroll, Lohnsteuer (payroll tax), and company records are updated promptly.
