How to Change Your Name on Your NZ Driver Licence
A complete guide to updating your NZTA driver licence name after marriage, divorce, or legal name change — including what to bring, where to go, and how much it costs.
Must be done in person — no online option exists. Visit an AA Centre or PostShop. A new photo is required, so you can't do this by post either.
What to Bring to the AA or PostShop
Your current NZ driver licence
Proof of name change — marriage certificate, dissolution order, or BDM Name Change Certificate
$53.60 payment (cash, EFTPOS, or credit card)
Current residential address (if different from licence)
Bring if recently moved
The Process — Step by Step
Get your proof of name change first
You'll need your BDM marriage certificate, dissolution order, or BDM Name Change Certificate before you can update your licence. This is the foundational document for all name change steps.
Find your nearest AA Centre or PostShop
Use the NZTA agent finder at nzta.govt.nz to locate your nearest AA Centre or PostShop. Both are authorised NZTA agents for licence updates.
Visit in person with your documents
Present your current licence and proof of name change. A staff member will verify your documents and take a new photo for your updated licence.
Pay the $53.60 fee
Payment is due at the time of application. Most centres accept EFTPOS, credit card, or cash.
Receive your new licence
Your new licence card will be mailed to your registered address within 5–10 working days. Your old licence is surrendered at the counter.
